A very beautiful unlacquered Yamaha 82 Custom Z tenor. The customer has had it for a few years and brought it in for it’s yearly tune up including a complete oil change. Nothing too difficult to this job except that the metal on these seems to be incredibly soft, meaning any key bending is partly undone by the metals ‘memory’.
A point worth noting on this horn was that the last person to secure the bell and body brace really put a lot of work into tightening that screw. During my review of the pad seating, the bell keys were both over-shooting their tone holes by touching in the front and not in the back. This is not completely unusual and made me suspect a bent bell, but after backing off the bell to body brace screw I noticed the pads were able to seat evenly again without any bell-bashing required.
I gave it a few passes under the air compressor to clean off the dust after all the keys were removed, oiled and seated everything and the customer was very happy with the results.
